VINEYARDS / CRUS

We find a number of great vineyards in the Tokaj Wine Region due to the little volcanic peaks/hills (intense volcanic activity 15 million years ago) that abound in a variation of volcanic rocks, to the variation of soil types, and the humidifying power of the confluencing rivers. We cultivate all the indegenious grape varieties of the Tokaj region on 10 hectares, in several crus.

Our crus are historically classified as grand crus (Király, Betsek, Kövágó, Szarvas) and premier crus (Zafír, Sajgó) situated in the communes of Tokaj, Tarcal, Bodrogkeresztúr, and Mád.

The exact classification of the crus in Tokaj dates back to as early as the 1720s when Mattias Bél, a Lutheran pastor and polimath first listed the best and second best crus in his writings. The creation of the Tokaj Wine Region goes back to the 17th century, almost a hundred years before the classification, when Tokaj vintners delineated the region in one of their gatherings, and specified required practices in grape growing and wine making in writing.

VINTAGES

2020

2020 is a challening year in the Tokaj region. Too much rain during the growing season which made protecting the grapes extremely difficult. Early rot. This vintage gave good wines only in the best vineyards, in low-yielding parcels, and with meticulous selection. The quantities in all wine categories were down. Late harvest and sweet szamorodni turned out well, almost no aszú was made. Look for the dry wines from this vintage.
